One thing to consider is that their is deja.com ... a public access news
client that is free for the use. I believe it accesses the news groups in
question. Therefore if you have web access, you now have NNTP access.

I second keeping it the way it is. Not everyone has news server access.
E-mail is the most common denominator here. Yes, you get
a lot of mail, but with the right e-mail program you can filter it and do
what you want with it.
