palm vII - get deviceID from palm OS call??

I want to retrieve the unique device ID  DIRECTLY from a 'c' program call.
Is this id device resident and retrievable, or does it come from palm.net
when one uses the pqa/html method?  If this is not possible, is there any
other way to uniquely identify the palm vII device programmatically?
