The device Id I was referring to is the one that you can get from a pqa
which I then was going to pass as a cmd arg into the os code.  The least
desirable of the three as I really didn't want to build a pqa around/in
front of the C code just to get the device ID, So I'll avoid that now,
having an alternative.
