OmniSky is a true TCP/IP service over pretty darn fast wireless (CDPD.) You
write socket code on top of TCP/IPand it goes out over the network. Nice.
Trouble is, the coverage isn't great and the signal seems to weaken
significantly indoors. Your mileage may vary. OmniSky uses the Minstrel
snap-on modem. http://www.omnisky.com
There is also the NetTech solution. NetTech is a middleware provider for
wireless solutions. The let you do non-TCP aynch message passing via their
ExpressQ pkg. They also have something called "SmartIP" which is a
lower-overhead version of TCP/IP that you can use over wireless networks.
Less overhead=fewer packets=less $$. http://www.nettechrf.com . You might
have to make a deal with the company to use the stuff -- I'm not sure if it
is shipping yet.
We're still looking into both at the company I work for, so I can't
recommend one or another. Good luck,
