Just for example, this morning Qualcomm and Sprint announced data service
trials at 144kpbs. I will not hazard a prediction when or where in the
world such service will roll out. My point was mainly that native TCP/IP
has a bright future for wireless and once you develop with it you can use
lots of different wireless technologies and service providers.

In short the pdQ is capable of connecting to any IP address on the net.
There's no proxy involved like there is with WAP, P7, Proxyweb, etc.
You do have to have service from a wireless phone provider though which is
more or less akin to OmniSky. The pdQ device itself is capable of having
the wireless phone service provider be the ISP or the wireless phone
provider forwarding you off to a traditional ISP or corporate dial-in pool.
It's better if the wireless phone service provider is the ISP because the
connect time is 5 seconds in stead of 30.
Which kind of service you get depends on the wireless carrier. For example
Sprint is encouraging you to use your own ISP. I believe Verizon
is just starting to roll out data now.
Using a cable to a cell phone has issues similar to the pdQ.
Perhaps the big lament here is that most wireless phone/data carriers don't
seem to be thinking very much about working with verticals which I'm
guessing is what most of the folks asking questions here are. Maybe we
could form a consortium or something to get their attention :-).
