Not quite true.  That is why there is the cradle-drain problem.

I kinda like the power circuit of the Firecracker module.  It has a PIC in it
that will run down to 2V if necessary.  They just took RTS and DTR and diode
protected them for a power source.  In my device I don't use DTR because it
is always on, so I use RTS and TXD as the Firecracker power source.

The easiest way is to use newer components that don't require a 3.3V or 5V
but rather can work from 2V to 7V.
