Arrgh.
Most of those "distractions" are actually just plug-in springboard mods
for the Handspring Visor. They're just an added feature to an already
inexpensive variant of the Palm. There's no focus being lost when another
company develops that stuff...Symbol developed in barcode scanners,
magnetic stripe readers, and rf networking equipment, and they're getting
wildly popular in the point of sale industry, along with other industries
(barcode scanning makes data entry incredibly fast and easy).
In all actuality, in the next year or so, you're going to see a licensed
version of the Palm OS, able to run on anything from a PDA to a cell phone
to a hand held data collector (not counting the Symbol Pilots, which I
develop apps for). And since they'll all be Bluetooth standard, they'll
all be able to communicate with each other through RF.
At least, that's what the pundits say.
