Why do people assume that Palm are a bunch of idiots? Do you really think
that the plan from day 1 was to sell a device at high price with least
possible memory and continue in that vein forever and that only the
"demands of developers and users" changed their course? Of course it
wasn't. Palm as much as any of us undoubtedly anticipated a continuing
stream of enhanced products, lower prices for older models, etc.
One should never underestimate the power of a good product to shape or
even create demand. It's true that some products are developed in
response to demand, and that marketing can create a demand for products
even when there isn't really a "need" for them. But it is also true that
a good product, like the Palm, can CREATE a market and CREATE a demand.
Of course Palm also responds to customer demands, market pressures, and
everything else. But the clear fact is that Palm got where it is by being
a leader, not a follower.
