You forget that not all Palm models have FLASH (nor do some Visors). And
I'll bet this won't change in the future unless FLASH becomes practically
free.

I think the answer is that there is no 100% way to identify every Palm
device uniquely (via software). The HotSync Name is about as close as you
can get but its not factory assigned or permanent (maybe a combination of
the HS name and the FLASH ID, if its present).
I remember reading a press release on Palmgear (or another Palm site) some
time back about a company/developer that could generate a unique ID for any
Palm including FLASHless models. I know that's not much help but
unfortunately I can't remember any more than that.
