Hello All,
I am completely new to the Palm OS and have spent hours the last few days
pouring over the data and guides I've found on various websites, alas, to no
avail. I work for a data recovery service and we have never worked with
handhelds before. I've got about a week to come up with a solution to my
assignment. See below.
I have been given the task of writing a program that will dump the complete
contents of the palmpilot's memory/storage into a fixed width text file so
we can search it on a Windows NT 4.0 platform. This included any
'freespace' that may exist, unfortunately I am not certain as to whether or
not freespace will passively retain any information in memory that was
deallocationed/deleted. I am not quite as familiar with RAM based storage
as I am with disk and tape type mediums.
Based on the research I've done regarding the HotSync, this data may
automatically be lost the next time I try to sync the palmpilot to a
computer and try to pull the data from it. The uncertainty has lead me to
be very cautious as I will only have one chance to grab the data before it
becomes completely unrecoverable.
This leads me to believe I will need to write a 'conduit' in order to pull
the information out of the palm pilot successfully without the hot sync
automatically zeroing out the deallocated memory. On the other hand I could
be totally going in the wrong direction. I've purchased a palm IV this
morning and I've experimented and have figured out how to grab information
off of the system in a very rudimentary fashion using the tools that come
with it. I will continue to search for a solution on my own but any
assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
