A couple of years ago (my how time flies) I played with this.
I've made the file available at:

Keep in mind that I wrote this 2 years ago...so you know as much about
it as I do...;^)
However, it's a more-or-less drop-in replacement for vertical scrollbars
(they are subsumed in the code, so your code has *minimal* changes.) It
*should* handle multiple colors, but when written this wasn't really an
option.
Give it a shot, see what you think.
