And this is an extremely important point.. and I think it can be stated
(truthfully) even stronger.. many WILL NOT upgrade the ROM. I've recently
put a product on the market aimed at a very small niche market (an organizer
and calculator type tools for Knitters) and I have discovered a small, but
significant quantity of users who didn't even realize they could add
APPLICATIONS. Granted, they may fall into the category of people that think
they did something wrong when Windows crashes .. and are afraid to do
anything other than "out of the box" features because they think they won't
understand it.. but upgrading your ROM is a much more difficult and complex
procedure than most people think they are capable of.
ROM upgrades are typically done by people like us (developers) and the power
users... which may be the major reason why Palm started charging for ROM
updates (they have, haven't they?).. they couldn't justify the cost of
making them available for such a small market. (And yes, sometimes less
market does mean more cost.)
