Upgradation of OS

Hi ,

Can anyone tell me how the upgradation of palm OS happens? Do we have to
just download some file and install  it on
palm and run it OR upgradation will happen form desktop computer ? Where the
upgradaded part will reside on RAM or ROM of  palm device?  Complete
information on this will be helpful.
