Can Palm Inc own the word "Palm" ?

Has anyone else had an e-mail from Palm threatening legal action if you use
the word "Palm" in the name of your software?
Is this just a bluff, or can they actually 'own' a word that has been in
general use in the English language for centuries?
If so presumable the word would have to be removed from all dictionaries,
anatomy text books, palm readers would have to find a new name for their
activities the list goes on and on.
