with your question, I guess the answer is no, but when I look through the
docs, I cannot find out where it says that.
If I use BmpCreate I get a version 2 bitmap. I can use BmpCreate to create
a 4 bit grayscale. I can set the transparent value in version 2 bitmaps.
So I would guess that I could do it.
I guess I was treating the 16 grayscales as a "color table" and then ...

how about re-thinking your strategy. pilrc does not support
transparency in anything but 8+ bpp
