The story is that there wasn't enough memory or CPU speed in the original
pilots for this. Conforming to a standard such as <stdio.h> has a cost to
it and Palm was not willing to pay the price. Palm's sell well because they
are easy to use and are inexpensive. Very few if any Palm device purchases
are made on the fact of conforming to standards like workstations or
cellphones.
