Actually, I think the reason was because those conversions were
simply not needed. The original Pilots were thought of to be
devices, and not so much as a platform. The decisions made were in
that light. At time went on and the devices turned into a platform,
conforming to standards became more important.
So the reason (as I understand it) was because of expediency in
getting the product out the door, not memory or CPU speed.
