I'm not exactly certain that needs defending, since I don't think it
has been attacked.

Most of the criticism was on how he presented himself. And yes,
there has been a productive thread about the shortcomings of the
Palm and PalmOS ... so, does "the right of members to criticize
this platform" really need defending? It seems that it is perfectly
acceptable and accepted as long as one is being rational about it
and not always telling others to "keep sticking their head in the sand".

There we differ. I think a compact API _does_ make the job easier.
There are certainly some things about it that I think could & should
be packaged up a little better w/o all the "fiddly bits" hanging out
(tables, for one) ... but _in general_ I prefer the smaller, simpler
approach to the gargantuan one.

Well enough. There are certainly things that "a PC in your pocket"
can do that the Palm can not. The question to me has always been
how well it performs the tasks I want it to do, and the times I've played
w/ a friend's WinCE machine it has always less direct to accomplish
what I do most.
Not that I don't like gadgetry -- I'd _love_ to have an iPaq to play with
... but it would be just that, a toy to play with and not a tool I would use
on a daily (hourly!) basis. The "gee whiz" factor only gets you so far
before the practicalities take over.
