Yup, that was it. The project had a splash screen that had become
corrupt somehow. I'd disconnected the display but the form was still
in the project. CW6 handled this OK, CW7 didn't (possibly is checking
more carefully). When I removed the resource file and recompiled the
problem went away.
This doesn't alter the fact that the error messages are particularly
unhelpful.
