I recently got a Palm m505 and also got the Xircom 802.11b wireless network
adapter. I've had some very good success using it with my wireless LAN at
home. I use PalmScape (dumped AvantGo - I didn't like all the extra
communications it did "on my behalf") to browse the Internet through a Linux
proxy server - PalmScape conveniently supports Basic Authentication for
proxies.

I've also used it to access other wireless networks. It *seems* that the
encryption keys overlap - i.e., if you set up a profile with 64-bit keys,
changing the 64-bit keys in another profile wipes the first ones out.
Also - it seems that if you use a 128-bit encryption key, it wipes out all
four 64-bit keys.

Also, it would be very convenient to have the Xircom adapter able to browse
(and report on) any Access Points it finds (I run a LinkSys wireless adapter
on my laptop, and I can see multiple wireless networks as I drive around -
mostly near schools).

Performancewise, the Xircom/Palm is pretty slow. Or something in the whole
path is, anyway. Running PalmScape, going to a machine that is local to my
"inside" network (i.e., not going through the proxy) and downloading a web
page that is exactly 100,000 bytes long (it's mostly html comment, so it
doesn't mess with the PalmScape display) took 61 seconds. (1639 Bytes per
second - somewhere between a 14.4 and 19.2 modem, if I calculated right).
That's pretty slow, but certainly adequate if you design the web pages
efficiently.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone else who has used the Xircom or other
wireless (802.11b, bluetooth, amateur radio, etc - *not* cellphone)
adapter - to get impressions, ideas, etc. You can post back here, or email
me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Thanks!
