Did you tell the OS about the NiMH batteries after you put them in? -- e.g. From a 
text input field, Shortcut..7 until it responds with "[NiMH]" -- If not, it probably 
thinks they're Alkaline which uses a different voltage curve look-up table. In any 
case, as far as 1.2 + 1.2 = 2.4 < 3.0 volts goes, yes, it's regulated both up and down 
as necessary by various circuitry.
