Another factor: you might want to check the cell voltage with a precision voltmeter.
NiMH AAA cells have a nominal rating of 1.2V each (2.4V per pair), but when fresh from a good quality charger, they can have a combined voltage of 3V+ (I'm assuming you've toggled the battery type to NiMH, right?)
