Don't add a pair of buttons, add just one. Label it '+/-'. Press it once to add a negative sign, press again to remove the sign. Trust me, its not kludgy. It kind of makes sense since most users have a hard time entering '-' instead of a space when using graffiti. Also, align the button on the left side of the numeric field, not the right. Looks better since the negative sign always appears on the left. An alternative option is to continue lobbying Palm to make sure this works properly in OS5+ and provide a patch for the older OSs. I tried for quite some time and found it easier to just add the button.
