Since you state your software works with a cable, could there be a bad electrical connection or a dirty port on your 500 and 505?. The universal connector is not very robust. Since there is no/little wipe mechanism to clean the contacts, I've found even body oils and hand lotion can interfere with the connection. Cables seem to exert more pressure on a smaller area on the connection than the cradle connector. Make sure none the pins on the cradle/sled connection are mangled. Also make sure you don't have any cold solder joints between the connector and your board. Perform your continuity test on the connector while applying some pressure to it.
