The combo cable may not work for debugging -- the cable has pins when connected that tell the device what is connected. These pins are used when you enter the debug mode for the device to know what channel to use in debugging. The i705 has USB debugging enabled, but it just doesn't work, so it looks like the cable is exciting the wrong debug connection. So I went and bought a serial cable for the i705. Any tricks in getting it to work? They just don't seem to want to talk to each other. Could it be that this 3rd party (Belkin) cable is doing something funky? It is a combo serial/USB cable. Do I need to change some setting on the i705?
As for settings... I don't know of any on the top of my head. The Handspring devices have a DebugPrefs app that can be used to force a particular connection type, but there's nothing like that for Palm OS.
