OK.  Turns out I was finally able to reproduce my problem on the 
Emulator and fix it there.  I had been convinced it was i705-specific, 
but it was, instead specific to the particular apps I had installed on 
my i705.  Installing the same apps to the Emulator gave me the same 
problem there.  Anyone want to buy a barely-used sync cable?  :-)
