Sounds like the Atari 2600... writes to registers are timed with the horizontal sweep on that machine, and to have a display that varies, you have to rewrite the registers during the horizontal blank. That's just a simplification -- the system is fascinating, and I got to hear Joe Decuir (one of the original 2600 hardware designers) describe the inspiration for it at CG Expo two years ago.
The 2600 is also commercially viable -- Activision is releasing emulators and ROM images as their "Activision Collection" product, out now on Playstation 2, and out soon on the GameBoy Advance (as seen at the Austin Gaming Expo).
