Does anyone know why Memo Pad has a 4K limit (except on the newest OS). Is that the max field size, or does it have to do with Hot-Sync, or some other reason?
Because on the original Palm OS devices which had 128K or 512K of memory, 4K was viewed as a reasonable record size that wouldn't promote a lot of memory fragmentation. On those early versions of Palm OS, storage memory was divided into 64K heaps, and the system would try to keep each database within one heap. Having chunks much larger than 4K would lead towards heap fragmentation, a big problem on OS 1 and 2.
