Well, it's not like the old resource format was proprietary. At least, it was in text, so that people could look at it and edit it.


Conversely, just because something is in XML doesn't mean it's NOT proprietary. The XML structure is standard and well known, but the way it can be built up can be arbitrarily complex. As well, I think that Microsoft applied for a patent regarding their use of XML in MS Office, so just because you're using XML doesn't mean that things are completely open.

I'm not surprised to see Palm do the same.

Our main reasons for moving to XML were that (a) we wanted something more than PilRC format in order to provide additional features (mostly regarding localization, I think), and (b) we wanted something that was more standard and amenable to other tools.
