I have programs on my palm that run in the background. There
must be a way of doing it surely, no?

Palm OS 5 and earlier don't support background processes. You can use
alarms and idle time notifications to do some processing while your
application isn't active, but your application will be running with
limited
resources at those times.
For Palm OS Cobalt, the Exploring Palm OS manuals talk about setting up
background threads.
