This subject is covered in great detail in textbooks on computer music and computer music synthesis. Some textbooks on digital signal processing and audio processing also cover a bit of this subject. There are several methods of sampled sound synthesis or playback which all have various advantages and disadvantages. IMHO. YMMV.
