I would have him say something honest, and not engage us in a
meaningless PR tango. If the target audience of this open letter is
software developers, then the method of delivery for his message was a
poor choice. In my experience, software developers tend to be quite
logical and do not respond to PR and/or advertising spinning in the
same way that the average consumer does.
This message was sent to all developers who are registered to receive email
from the PluggedIn developer program that Palm runs. However, it looks
like there was a delivery problem, and many developers did not receive
this. I know I got a copy in my mailbox through my PIP account, but others
did not.
In the note, Ed Colligan said: "We have a rich product roadmap of Palm
OS-based handheld computers, mobile managers AND Treo smartphones that we
intend to deliver. Our Palm OS customer loyalty is extremely high, and we
intend to continue to earn that loyalty with great Palm OS-based
products." The information about the Palm OS license was supporting
material. How clearer should it have been?
The point of the letter was to answer two questions:
Q: Why are we developing products using Windows Mobile? A: The smartphone
market is growing, and supporting another platform allows us to develop
different kinds of solutions for different customers.
Q: Are we dropping Palm OS? A: No. We have new PDAs and smartphones that
use Palm OS in development.
