External disk drives are great.

The only problem seams to be with XP that the operating system doesn't seam
to recognize more than approximately one terabyte.

Thus the total of all internal drives and external drives can not exceed one
terabyte.

The closer you get to a tera bight the less stable the system becomes.

The external drive may simply go away right in the middle of an operation.

Thus if you were to hook up two external 500 G drives and have an internal
320 or so one of the 500's will not be found.

I don't know how to get around this limit.

Subject: LaCie external HD

Back in 2006 there was lots of chatter from list members about discs having
a limited life, etc. So on 11/25/06 I purchased a LACIE 500GB D2 EXTREME
USB 2.0 external hard drive recommended by a salesman at our local Mac store
and service center. For me the $343.72 cost was heavy compared to regularly
buying discs but it felt good having a heavy, all metal "library" to store
the Beta models, monthly club meeting photos, creative writing efforts, tax
info, important e-mails, etc.

Last week 11/20/08 the Lacie external drive refused to appear on my desk
top. I disconnected, then reconnected the unit and a message appeared "could
not read disc insertion." I took the unit to the Mac sales and service
center; days later I was told:

The hard drive is not mounting.

The hard drive is an unsupported format.
There is no data on the hard drive.

Service charge? Sixty dollars.

For those members who may have a Lacie the only tip off I am able to offer
is that I remember the Lacie was slow to respond the last two times I
accessed information before the unit died.

So folks, I spent $ 403.72 and lost all my work, research, and information
for the past two years.

My discs from 2002 are still working beautifully.
