I had the same problem as you with to 320GB external drives (WD). One of the 
things I noted was that they didn't like sharing the same USB hub. 

When I plugged them into separate USB ports, both drives showed up. So now I've 
got to get some extra hubs and see if I can plug all four of my external dives 
and have them all play nice.

And then again, maybe not.
