OK--y'all are forgetting one very important rule: never see the movie after reading the book. Well, maybe if it has been twenty years since you read the book.
Not all books can be translated into a movie, and even if they can the movie maker is at liberty to alter things to make what he thinks will be a better movie. Often after disobeying the rule and seeing a movie after reading the book I have had to acknowledge that yes--it was a good movie, but I was mad because it didn't follow the book closely enough. Had I not read the book it would have been a fine show. Bottom line--always read the book second.
