I do anything automotive, except mechanics. I've done wholesale and retail
auto parts sales, outside sales representative for automotive businesses,
Service Writer for auto repair shops, and my last job was as Shop Manager
for a general repair shop. It's an impossible market where I live as, since
the shop I managed closed, the area has lost four other repair shops and
three dealerships.

After I lost my job, I really saw the writing on the wall in the local
industry, so I went out and got my commission as a Notary Public so I could
work as a loan signing agent, doing mortgage re-fi's and Home Equity Lines
of Credit, but the housing market tanked about the same time my commission
came through, so all I've made from that is a few bucks here and there doing
basic notaries.

My wife lost her job a year ago, and she's gone back to school to learn IT,
but we both worry what the job market will be by the time she gets her
degree next year. In the meantime, she's working part-time for a local
psychologist.

We are lucky in that my mother-in-law has an income that allows her to pay
our mortgage, and our cars are both paid off, so we have no major payments,
but we've both run out of UI benefits and the job market shows no sign of
improving.

Thanks for the good wishes. I was out of a regular job from August
2006 to May 2007. The market for my area is very competitive with a
lot of the work being sent offshore. Plus, with the economy the way it
is, those firms who still are doing implementations are not willing to
pay travel expenses. And there aren't many Oracle shops in Western
Washington - it tends to be Microsoft country - not biting the hand
that feeds...

What type of work did you do?
