Not to compare to Mikes plight, but one of our cats had various renal problems. One ultrasound found a bunch of stones in one of his kidneys that needed to be removed surgically.
When the vet got in there, it wasn't a bunch that could be removed, it was a clump of sand-like stones. Had to remove the whole kidney. Saw the kidney in a jar afterwards. I'm not a doctor, but even I could tell the kidney was shot to hell. Litlte guy was up and bounding around in two days!
