I suppose many other list members have received the e-mail advising that the German paper model shop Scheuer & Struver has filed for insolvency.
The e-mail said the company and administrator were hoping to find investors to keep the concern going. I wish them well. I've bought items from the company from time to time, and the service was excellent. The killer was the German postage rates, which could easily cost much more than the order itself. Often I'd start to fill out an order, get to the checkout and see what the postage was --- and cancel it. As a check, this morning I looked again at the online store. A very nice ship model was going to cost 9.99 Euros, but postage to Australia would have been another 25 Euros. All up, that's a total of more than US$51. And that's too expensive for me. Perhaps if I were to buy only a model a year I could justify it. But many other paper modellers are like me - they collect models, not necessarily to build, but for a variety of other reasons, including appreciating the graphic design work. Some might think me weird, but occasionally I like to peruse some of my unbuilt models, just as one might look at a book of landscapes: for inspiration, encouragement, ideas on solving other building problems. I hope Scheuer & Struver survives - I really do. After all, for about 16 years they've been a wonderful flag bearer for our hobby/obsession. If only we could do something about the postage.
