Paul, Hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but I think you need to seriously look at buying an new machine very soon.
Good luck with restoring everything - and yes, system restore can (and sometimes does) delete everything in your My documents folder.. That's why I turn my restore off. It's not a complete copy of windows, only the settings and a small few small exe files. Toodles!
