It died a little over a year later and now is a door stop. The rest of the story: I took it to the service department of the store at which it was purchased. They Charged $65.00 kept it two or three days, and pronounced it dead. There were responses on this list about my plight and it was surprising to read that many of our list members also had their external hard drives go belly up. One of our master paper modelers on this list checked the thing over, pointed out that the service department never even opened the case. He then rebuilt it into a new case at a cost of $35.00 in parts and was able to bring to life most of the stored data and pictures. I am not giving his name without his permission. Thank goodness I saved all the copied CDs which date back to 2002 and still operate PERFECTLY. Of course I just smile and walk away when I hear guys screaming about their external hard drives failing. "Welcome to the Boat."
