my worst was in 1988, I bought a 3rd party memory chip for a DEC Microvax II
because DEC wanted $14,000 USD for it.   The 3rd party vendor only wanted
$7,000.   It was an 8mb memory card.  I boosted the memory for the MicroVAX II
from 4MB to 12MB.   It serviced 12 people, 4 automated robotic systems,  and 5
printers.   the memory card was roughly the size of an old record album sleeve,
and about 3/4 of an inch thick; over 2x the size and weight of my current
laptop (with 1GB of memory and a 320GB drive: $360)

That same year in 1988 I paid $300 for a 40mb scuzzy drive for my 286 pc (well
I paid $1200 for the 1mb pc with the 40mb drive.)  And that was 1988 dollars,
not 2010 dollars.  I had to save for a year to get that  $1200.   That's the
equivalent buying power to around $4000-$5000 today.

I remember when a 40 MEG (Mb not Gb) hard drive was AU$600...back in the
dark dim days of the 8086 processor when standard HDD was 20 Mb.
