I seldom use thicker card such as backer board.
I just laminate extra layers of the heavy cardstock t.o desired thickness.
It tends to add extra stiffness where I need it.
This is affordable because one of my favorite Seasons is about to start
Back To School Month!
Last year I got my 2 dollar a bottle glue at 6 bottles per dollar.
Cardstock at half price, sharpie markers and colored pencils, etc. two thirds off.

Maybe next year on the Merchanical Bank, though it looks interesting.
My head is already turning to starting my Halloween builds (my personal favorite holiday). First up, finishing Robert Nava's huge, great, Escape From The Haunted Mansion Game
and to finishing some Christmas designs I have in the works by mid-November.

70 feet. Sounds like a lot of fun. You could send grapes across the
room to someone.
Making those beams solid is a good idea, especially the Bumper Beam
because it will take a lot of abuse with the extra force from the
extra rubber bands. Make sure you reenforce the trigger, too.

I am not sure how thick the card was in the original set, Some of the
other models I built from that same group obviously needed some thick
card so they would work better. Lots of reenforcement was needed in
some. Next time I try building one of them I will print the parts on
regular paper then laminate that on to some thick card like the backer
board of writing paper pads.

You should try the Mechanical Bank. It works good once you tweak the
gears to keep it running. (^_^)
