I had a similar problem last fall and the solution was to use one of those recovery firms who take your old drive and extract/upload the data to a repository and then down load it back to a CD or to your new drive once the repairs have been completed. I don't know how one would do that themselves, and thought the few dollars they charged to be well worth the heartache, but if you are computer savy I gather using recovery soft ware and another drive/computer is the way to go.
Backing up now since that solves the loss of data problem, which seems to occur all too often. I do wish you luck in recovering your data! Cheers!
