I strongly support this idea! I'd even go so far as to say a 1.0 of
PAR.pm should be in Perl 5.10 core (but not Par::Packer). That would
make it easy to distribute .par bundles without executable headers
for OSes where Perl is known to be pre-installed (I'm thinking ahead
to the possibility that Apple's 10.6 will include Perl 5.10).
I could then see .par superseding .ppm as the standard mechanism for
distributing pre-built packages to end users lacking compilers.
