I strongly support this idea! I'd even go so far as to say a 1.0 of
PAR.pm should be in Perl 5.10 core (but not Par::Packer). That would
make it easy to distribute .par bundles without executable headers for
OSes where Perl is known to be pre-installed (I'm thinking ahead to the
possibility that Apple's 10.6 will include Perl 5.10).
I could then see .par superseding .ppm as the standard mechanism for
distributing pre-built packages to end users lacking compilers.
I doubt PAR will ever be accepted to the core. I quickly asked Rafael
about it. Various reasons:
- Canonical answer "Core is big enough"
- PAR evolves too quickly for the core.
- Portability concerns: VMS & EBCDIC?
Now, the first point cannot be circumvented.
The second point might soon change: My spare time that I am willing to
put into OSS development will diminish once I start programming all day
for my thesis and it doesn't look like somebody will pick it up. The
portability concerns should only apply to PAR::Packer, not PAR itself
which is pure-perl and, I think, doesn't use any non-core modules except
PAR::Dist any more.
If you would like to lobby for the inclusion, please go ahead, you have
my blessing, but it'd be a tough fight. You'd have to start by proposing
it to p5p. If you do, however, please include some well thought out
reasoning.
Cheers,
