In that case the barrier to entry still isn't that high, since everybody already uses email and subscribing to a mailing list with mailman is as simple as with any other newsletter. The only difference is having to use git with email, for which there are a lot of tutorials online and after the first setup (which you can compare with subscribing to Github for example), the user just has to run one command, which is arguably faster than submitting a pull request on Github.
