M'afrika Christine Qunta, an Africanist who served on the SABC Board during the
Thabo Mbeki era, should be congratulated for the success in insisting that the
public broadcaster spend up to R4m on the documentary. The outcomes of the
work done, and the footage makes for interesting viewing and a puts a fresh
perspective on Sobukwe. Each year in the past ten years at least there has
been growing publicity on the contributions of Mangaliso Sobukwe to the main
agenda of liberation politics in South Africa, from many persuasions and from
individuals other than PAC members. I would take it that since this project
was implemented around, the chief censors within the SABC kept shunting it up
and down to the archives refusing to broadcast. The centenary celebrations and
the costs allocated to it must have pressured the SABC to use the documentary
in March 2012 - also known for 21 March and dubbed Sobukwe month by the
broadcaster. I'm also sceptical of the treatment in the documentary of support
and endorsement of Sobukwe by individuals such as, for e.g., Kathrada who was
on the Rivonia Trial, and even characters like Lennox Mlonzi who defied the
call for 'No Defence, No Bail, No Fine' during the Positive Action Campaign,
and went on to serve in the Urban Bantu Councils and formed anti-PAC
organisations like the Christian Democratic Party in which he was number two in
the list during the 1994 general elections. By inference, the viewers would
liken sobukwe to these personalities. Also, there was open promotion of the
ANC as the premier organisation in that conjured up scene at Fort Haare where
the actors play out Sobukwe and AP Mda in a documentary of the leader and
founder of the PAC. That is negative propaganda smuggled in a PAC documentary,
to promote the ANC. But let us all agree, this documentary puts us in the
limelight and it educates the masses that there were other credible leaders
other than the incumbent ruling party. Izwe lethu Jaki To:

Seroke and Ndebele

I hope everything is well with you. assuming that you watched the documentary
that was screened on SABC 1 about Robert Sobukwe. I was indeed thrilled with
the comments from interviewees more especially from the longest-serving
apartheid
minister Pik Botha who admitted that the whole Africa wanted to negotiate with
Sobukwe other than Mandela. I was somewhat amazed that Ka-Platjie has some
interest of writing about PAC or its heroes, as it is said that writing some
book about Sobukwe. This
contradicts with his master , Jacob Zuma, who averted mentioning the name of
Sobukwe at Kliptown. A more pathetic twaddle came from Fikile Mbalula who said
“ this day, is not a PAC day”. I fail to understand why we don’t organize our
own rally at Sharpeville.
