Hi Julia, Ok, well I don't know if your USB sound card would be that different to my External SoundBlaster Audigy 2NX. The Audigy 2NX is also a USB SoundBlaster live card. Somehow I don't think the actual hardware of the two cards would be different. With my card, the behaviour you describe is normal. There is only one volume control for the line-in and the Microphone despite the fact that there are two separate ports. If your USB SoundBlaster card acts the same as mine as I suspect, I think you will find that if you plug in a microphone into the mic jack as well as something into the line-in port, , the line-in port will become active and the Microphone will not work regardless if you put a microphone into the microphone port. However, the microphone will work once you take what you have plugged into the line-in port out. If that makes sense. In other words, the line-in takes priority over the Microphone. Mind you it could be the other way around as I no longer use that USB card any more therefore it's been a while since I have looked at the ports etc.

One thing I read in the manual is that the line in will override the microphone when using both inputs.
