Hi Joanne.

To make things where they'll positively work, you'd use a cartridge for your
books, and an external drive to store them, but this isn't always the case.
Some people have had success playing books from external drives.  One such
drive that seems to have little problems is the Kingston Data Traveler.  Be
warned, however.  External drives don't always work with the NLS player.
This is why I wrote that if you want to be positive things would work, use a
blank cartridge to play books.
