Hmmm, I got the modem Charter cable used to provide when they did wifi all
in ones. It's made by SMC. I wonder if the problem is that I have it set to
802.11n only as this macbook I run XP on, and all my wireless stuff has N.
The specs for the little airplay receiver didn't say what it supports, but
if it required G or B only, it shouldn't ever work if I have it set to N
only mode. It will play nice all day if I never let audio stop, but as soon
as the source disconnects, it's as if the airplay receiver's plug went with
it in that there will be no reconnecting unless I take it out of the dock,
wait long enough, and replug.

Ah yes, I've heard of Remote Speakers.
Airfoil is on a slightly larger scale, you can for example "Hijack" any
device or software on your computer that gives out audio, you could for
example "Hijack" JAWS and send it around the room or your network so
therefore you can send Winamp, Windows Media File, a DVD Player, your
line-in of your sound card or whatever.
If you're using Airfoil to stream from a media player such as Winamp or VLC
you can use a remote control on the receiving device to manipulate tracks,
volume etc.
Regarding your airPlay problems? All i can say is you're not alone and I do
have them from time-to-time.
My solution was to use Google and to read the forums to find out what seemed
to be causing these problems and there is of course no direct anser to that
question but the majority of cases seemed to be solved with a router that
provides good wireless coverage and the flexibility of a full setup, such a
facility exists in the Asus RTN56U.
I won't go into all the pros and cons here so I'll just mention a few things
you can do.
You can separate the 2.4GHZ and 5.0GHZ thus dedicate those tasks which
require more band with to the network with the least interference.
Another thing you may like to try is to manually set the wireless channel
for your router, I know the router is supposed to change channel in auto
mode but I've seen a lot of routers with problems there, the RTN56U seems
pretty stable, I might get a 20 second dropout on the odd occasion when the
Asus changes channel, with the RTN56U you can also specify the band width of
each network.
Just some points to ponder.

I used one called Remote Speakers. It is quite accessible, and comes with
a winamp output plugin, so you can airplay directly from Winamp. I am
finding that using airplay is quite problematic. I am using this little
device called the Lario HD Music receiver, which is one of those adapters
that plugs into a 30-pin dock to give it airplay functionality. It plays
OK the first time, but within a few seconds of audio stopping, it
disappears from the airplay list. This happens with the computer program
or phone. I emailed their suppport and got a replacement, but this one
exhibits the same behavior. Is the problem my wifi router, or does the
firmware in the device have some bug that crashes it upon audio stop? If I
want to start playing again, I might have to then replug it several times
before it shows up again.

Okay well i'm not sure what you're referring to here.
Airfoil is only used if you're planning to stream audio from your
computer, that is to say audio from your computer from sources other than
iTunes which has airPlay built-in.
I've been using Airfoil for the last 5 years and had no problems whatever,
sure the Windows version takes a little getting used to but again, if you
have a little patience you can easily look up and learn the shortcut keys.

Ar never looked into Airplay devices. I fiddled around with Airfoil and
think the idea is cool but don't have a hardware device to really try it
out.

I have the Bose Soundlink Air here, a real treasure box.
Course the nice thing about that speaker is that it not only sounds good
but its totally portable with a rechargeable battery fitted so take it
anywhere and get ready to groove! just amazing what Bose have done with
that thing.
Given its size stereo separation isn't a problem so all you have to do
is to sit back and enjoy.
Bose have a couple of new models in the Soundtouch Air series, one is a
portable and the other two are designed for rooms however the software
isn't accessible so all you can really do with them is to "airPlay"
stream to them so given that - if you were considering something with
airPlay capabilities from Bose - then you'd be best off with the
Soundlinke Air.

Talking of speakers and speaker docks has anyone tried any from Bose or
Sonus? My father recommends these brands and I will research myself.
This is for an upcoming 30th birthday present of mine. Sure there are
others and please feel free to share these. But I have heard a Bose
Radio and was very impressed with it so much so I am looking into
acquiring Bose equipment starting off with wireless speakers. Also has
anyone heard of a device from Bose that connects to a TV and supposedly
brings the sound to the whole room? Any or all comments are welcome.
Thanks!
